A Guest Lecture on “What is Research” was delivered by Prof Ashish Bhatnagar from Department of Microbiology, MDSU Ajmer. His key areas of research are bioremediation, stress biology, etc. He talked about by what and what not of research and defined research as creation of knowledge. He emphasized mainly on data and knowledge based on facts and truths and not on opinions and perceptions. He also discussed the setbacks of concepts and varied perspectives. He inspired the students by inciting the thought of raising questions and finding answers and utilizing right tools for analysis and right interpretation. Understanding science, classical scientific research and characteristics of research were briefly discussed. He wrapped the discussion with few examples to make students understand the common mistakes that can be avoided with general awareness.

International Youth Day Celebration on 12th August 2015
  • Report on International Youth Day Celebration on 12th August 2015

International Youth Day is marked and celebrated in India and throughout world on 12th August each year, with an aim to rejoice the contribution youths make to society. Young people have led the world in encouraging recycling and green lifestyles and the use of new technology. Hence, an awareness and promotional activity was organized on 12th August 2015 to celebrate International Youth Day by Department of Biotechnology for M.Sc. students of Biotechnology & Microbiology. The students prepared and distributed badges with inspirational messages among faculty, students and office staff to spread awareness about this event.

Stall in Bazaar on 17th -18th September, 2015
  • The 4th Bazaar on IIS campus 17th -18th September, 2015

Impressive! Perhaps it was not a coincidence that, The Bazaar on IIS campus by E-cell (NEN) scheduled to be held for two days on 17th -18th September, 2015. The objective of the event was to promote and instill entrepreneurial skills amongst the students. Students and faculty from all the departments of the university participated with lot of enthusiasm and ran their stalls of nutritive snacks and drinks, innovative detergents, recycled and paper mash articles and many more with least drag-and-drop. In short, the initial selection and screening of the team to put stall was done at the departmental level by the departmental Head. Department of Biotechnology had put up a stall –AAMCHI THADI. The Student/faculty team was required to sell their idea/product/service which should be in sync with the department. The profits generated would also be kept by the teams which invested. The ideas and stalls which stands out, adds a new entrepreneurial level and one can vouch that it has worked wonderfully will be awarded on the last day in various categories like- Most innovative business concept, business venture, Star, Campus company, Best decorated stall and Best theme. In conclusion, the event on the first day was good and on par with the expectation.  It was a decent event and still on second day offers enough opportunities to first time entrepreneurs.

 

Extension activity on 28th-29th march, 2016

Extension activity titled “Best out of waste and helping hands” on 28th-29th march, 2016: Helping Hands

Student volunteers convinced faculty and students to donate used clothes. All clothes collected were checked to ensure that they were not torn. Students washed the clothes (if received unwashed) and ironed them. Then they segregated the clothes according to different age groups and packed them.  The clothes of children were donated to NGO Naya Savera and of adults to Mother Teresa Home on 29 March 2016. The students interacted with the care taker at Mother Teresa Home and enquired about the contributions they can make on their end to help the needy.

 

Best Out of Waste

Student volunteers convinced faculty and students to donate used wedding invitation cards.  Dr. Payal Mehtani trained them to prepare envelopes from these cards. Once the cards were collected, then from 25 February -25 March 2016 volunteers prepared envelopes (gift cards) from these waste cards. On 28-29 March 2016, the students set up a counter outside D-block in the university campus and sold these envelopes. An amount of Rs. 4020 was collected out of selling envelopes. The students along with Dr. Payal Mehtani and Dr. Charu Sharma visited two NGOs i.e.  Naya Savera and Mother Teresa Home on 29 March 2016. The money collected was equally donated to both the NGO’s.

Impact or outcome of the activity on the participants

From this activity the students learned the waste management in an interesting way and also taught the same to other students and faculty. This would help them to reuse the wedding cards at their homes also. A feeling of social responsibility was inculcated in the students when they interacted with the members of both the NGO’s. They also learned that their small effort can be of great help to such people who really need love and affection from all of us. Some of the students also decided to visit these places and help them regularly by devoting their time and fulfilling their requirements.

Feedback of the participants

Students were overwhelmed when they visited Naya Savera. They felt happy to contribute their bit to the society. They also asked if such activities can be conducted on a regular basis. Two students have even become the registered volunteers of Naya Savera and are working on different projects for the NGO.

 

Orientation Programme on 22nd September 2016
  • An orientation programme for Research Scholars of various disciplines of the university on 'Intellectual Property Rights

The IPM Cell of the University conducted an orientation class for Research Scholars of various disciplines of the university on 'Intellectual Property Rights' on 22 September 2016 during 2.00 PM – 3.00 PM in Seminar Room of the University. The orientation was aimed at creating awareness about patent and IPR and to incline students to apply patent for their scientific research outputs.

The session was taken by IP Attorney Mr. Pankaj Kumar. The topics covered in the session were as follows:

1. General awareness on IPR

2. Procedure to get a Patent

3. Understanding inventions – definition, patentable criteria

4. Conducting prior art search - Establishing patentability

5. Disclosing invention for drafting patent specification

6. Understanding a patent specification

7. Drafting patents specification

 

 

Workshop on 26th April 2017
  • Report on Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) on 26 April 2017 at India International School, Sitapura, Jaipur

India International School, Sitapura, Jaipur have organized a workshop on “Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)” on 26 April 2017 to raise the level of awareness on IPR among the school students. The resource person Mr. Pankaj Kumar (Coordinator, IP Management Cell, the IIS University, Jaipur) expressed his thought on the importance of the IPR and significance of the day 26 April in international context that how the day is celebrated all over the world as World IP Day and with a new theme every year this day. This day (on which the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Convention came into existence in 1970) was designated by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to "raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life" and "to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe" Since then, World IP Day has offered a unique opportunity each year to join with others around the globe to consider how IP contributes to the flourishing of music and the arts and to driving the technological innovation that helps shape our world. The theme chosen by WIPO for the World IP Day 2017 is “Innovations - Improving Lives”.

In view of this year theme, the day was celebrated here and presentation on the theme exploring how innovation is making our lives healthier, safer, and more comfortable, turning problems into progress. We’ll look at how the intellectual property system supports innovation by attracting investment, rewarding creators, encouraging them to develop their ideas, and ensuring that their new knowledge is freely available so that tomorrow’s innovators can build on today’s new technology. From new medicines and materials to improved crop varieties and communications, innovation is making our lives healthier, safer, and more comfortable. Innovation is a human force that knows no limits. It turns problems into progress. It pushes the boundaries of possibility, creating unprecedented new capabilities.

World Intellectual Property Day 2017 celebrates that creative force. We’ll explore how some of the world’s most extraordinary innovations have improved our lives; and how new ideas are helping tackle shared global challenges, such as climate change, health, poverty and the need to feed an ever-expanding population.We’ll look at how the intellectual property system supports innovation by attracting investment, rewarding creators, encouraging them to develop their ideas, and ensuring that their new knowledge is freely available so that tomorrow’s innovators can build on today’s new technology.

Lastly the workshop ended with some open questions like Which innovation has most improved your life? What more can be done to make sure new technologies reach the people who needthem?  What do you think should be the priorities for future innovation? 

Extension Activity on 24th March, 2017.
  • Milk Testing Drive

Milk is the most common source of nutrition which is consumed on daily basis in every household. Adulterants if any, present in the milk can cause considerable damage to liver and kidney. In order to check the milk quality, a milk testing booth was set up in the campus outside the D-Block on 24 March, 2017. Students and faculty members were requested to bring milk raw (unboiled) milk samples (200 ml) consumed daily by them. A total of about 36 milk samples were tested which belonged to both pasteurized milk of regularly used brands like Amul, Lotus, Mother dairy, Gorus, Sarasetc as well as milk sold by local vendors of different areas. Students tested the presence of water, sucrose, starch, ammonium sulphate, acid, soap and formalin in the collected samples and generated report which was given to the participants on 25 March 2017. It was found that approximately 14% of the samples were containing residues of acid and about 6% contained formalin. Excess of water was found in about 20% of the samples. However, the presence of other adulterants was not detected in any of the samples collected.

  • Impact of the Activity:

​Impact or outcome of the activity on the participants-This activity created interest of students in simple laboratory exercises and made them learn about the different tests which can be easily conducted in the laboratory for determining the quality of milk samples.

Feedback of the participants-Faculty members and student enthusiastically participated and bought the milk samples purchased from dairy or from local vendors. An awareness was generated when the reports of milk quality testing was handed to them. Some of them decided to use the milk brands which were of better quality.

 

Educational Visit on 20th January, 2018
  • Educational Visit to S.S. Jain Subodh Girls College, Jaipur

S.S. Jain Subodh Girls College, Jaipur organized Sciencepedia- An Intercollege Science Exhibition and Competition for students of Science faculty and A National Workshop on Environmental Challenges, Awareness and its Solutions in collaboration with DST, Rajasthan and Vigyan Bharti on 20 January, 2018. 18 students of Department of Biotechnology and Botany along with Dr. Payal Mehtani participated in the same. The students prepared Models and Posters for the competition. The theme of the completion was Environmental issues, Climate change, Waste management, Pollution and its implication on human health, etc. In non-working model (student) category, Ms. Diksha Sharma bagged the third prize and in Research Poster category (Faculty), Dr. Payal Mehtani won the best poster prize.

Participation of students in a one day workshop on IP and Bioentrepreneueship 2018

The students of B.Sc. and M.Sc. Biotechnolgy and Microbiology attended one day workshop on Intellectual Property and Bioentrepreneueship on 25nd January, 2018 at Centre for Converging Technology, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur. The Faculty coordinator for the event was Dr Ameeta Sharma. The students participated and attended this event with lot of energy. they learnt basic concepts of Intellectual Property and Bioentrepreneueship.
