Unit I: 
Liquid and Solid Waste Disposal

Different types of liquid waste treatment: Primary, Secondary and tertiary treatment. Aerobic process – activated sludge, oxidation ditches, and trickling filters, Anaerobic Process – anaerobic digestion, anaerobic filters, up flow anaerobic sludge. Solid Wastes: Sources and management (Sanitary landfills, incineration, composting, vermiculture, methane production).

Biodegradation and Bioremediation

Biodegradation of natural compounds (cellulose, hemicelluloses, lignin, chitin), Bioremediation: Ex situ and in situ approach. Biodegradation of Xenobiotics: (Aromatic and Aliphatic Pesticides, and hydrocarbons), bioaccumulation and biomagnification

Unit III: 
Biodeterioration and Bioleaching

Biodeterioration of Course and Course pulp, wood, paint, textiles, leather, metals (corrosion). Control of biodeterioration. Bioleaching of metals, Microbial enhanced oil recovery.

Unit IV: 
Industrial Fermentations

Microbial production of industrial products (microorganisms involved, media, fermentation conditions, downstream processing and uses): Ethanol, Vitamins (Riboflavin), Antibiotics (Penicillin), Amino acid (Glutamic acid), Organic acids (Citric acid), Enzymes (Amylase, Lipases).

Unit V: 
Industrial application of microbes

Biomass based products: Biopesticides (Thuricide and Trichoderma), Yeast: SCP, Microbial transformation of Steroids, Mushroom cultivation, Biofuels, Bioleaching, Mineral benefication and Oil Recovery.
