Objective: 

This course will enable students to study international arrangements and learn Trademark, Geographical Indications and some other IPRs related contemporary issues

 

Unit I: 
International arrangements

Paris convention; Berne convention; WTO and TRIPS; World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO): Background and the history, Mission & Activities, Structure, Administration, WIPO administered Treaties, IP day

Unit II: 
Trademark

Meaning and function of Trademarks; need to protect trademark, Trademarks Law; term of protection, kind of mark that can be used as trademark; Generic trademarks; Conditions for protection of a trademark, Procedure for Registration of Trademarks; Information required to file a Trade mark; searching for trademark; Classification of trademark

Unit III: 
Geographical Indications

Meaning of Geographical Indications, Salient features of the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act 1999; GI Registration Process and Procedure for Filing GI, Impacts of GI registration in India;

Unit IV: 
Other IPRs

Layout designs of ICs; new plant varieties and breeders rights; utility model; Domain  names and cyber squatting

Unit V: 
IPR related contemporary issues

Unfair Competition; compulsory licensing; National IP Policy, Scheme for Facilitating Startups Intellectual Property (SIPP)
