Hands-on workshop on the multimode reader 03.03.2023

Objective of the workshop/seminar/activity: To give hands on training of the instrument, Varioskan LUX Multimode Microplate Reader to students and faculty.

Summary/Description: The workshop began with a brief introduction to the instrument, Varioskan LUX Multimode Microplate Reader. The instrument is an easy-to-use instrument. This microplate reader offers features that help save time and reduce common errors in the lab—including automated dynamic range selection, which adjusts the optimal reading range based on signal intensities; and built-in safety controls, which alert you to potential errors before they happen. The workshop also included a demo of the instrument by the experts.

The experts introduced the participants to some striking features of the instrument which are as follows:

  • Operates in two or more detection modes

  • Measurement modes: End-point, kinetic, spectra, multipoint and kinetic spectra

  • Measurement speed: Reads a 96-well plate in 15 s, a 384-well plate in45 s, and a 1,536-well plate in 135 s (minimum times).

  • Interface: PC software (SkanIt software)

  • Automatic dynamic range selection

  • Smart safety controls

  • Integrated gas control

  • Flexible wavelength selection

  • Plate types: 6-384 well plates

  • Wavelength range: 200–1,000 nm (Absorbance) Excitation wavelength range: 200–1,000 nmEmission wavelength range270–840 nm (Fluorescence)

  • Light source: Xenon flash lamp

  • Integrated gas control

The students proactively participated in the demonstration and most of them gained a hands-on experience with the instrument using their own samples. The students even operated the SkanIt software, which is an interface for the instrument.

Outcome of the activity/event/seminar/workshop:

The participants were able to understand various aspects of the instrument and its application in the field of nucleic acid classification, immunoassays, cell viability, cell proliferation, cell toxicity studies, measurement of enzymatic activity, epigenetics study, etc.
