Objective of the workshop/seminar/activity:
1. To make students learn and perform the milk adulteration tests.
2. To detect adulterants in milk samples brought for testing by faculty and students of IISU.3.
Summary/Description:
Milk is the most common source of nutrition which is consumed on daily basis in every household. Adulterants if any, present in the milk can cause considerable damage to liver and kidney. In order to check the milk quality, a milk testing booth was set up in the campus outside the D-Block on 16-17 November, 2022. Students and faculty members were requested to bring chilled raw milk (unboiled) samples (300 ml) consumed daily by them. A total of about 15 milk samples were tested which belonged to both pasteurized milk of regularly used brands like Amul, Lotus, Mother dairy, Gorus, Sarasetc. as well as milk sold by local vendors of different areas. Students tested the presence of water, sucrose, starch, ammonium sulphate, acid, soap and formalin in the collected samples and the results were shared on WhatsApp on 18 November, 2022. Approximately 73% of the samples were found positive for the presence of table sugar sucrose. However, the presence of other adulterants like acids, starch, formalin, detergent and ammonium sulphate were not detected in any of the samples collected.
Outcome of the activity/event/seminar/workshop: Participants were benefitted in variety of ways like:
The beneficiaries were able to confirm the purity of their milk samples.
The participating students were able to learn the milk adulteration testing procedures.
The activity created awareness about adulteration of food among faculty and students of IISU.
