Science day celebration 28.03.2023

Objective of the activity:

To celebrate science week and generate awareness in students about:

  • Current diseases, their treatments, human physiology and anatomy.
  • Road safety, emergency life-saving measures and blood donation
  • Latest scientific technique of Robotic surgery and Artificial intelligence

Summary

Day 1: Visit to SMS Medical College, Jaipur

The celebration of science week started on 27 February 2023 where students visited “Science of Life Exhibition” organized by SMS medical college on the occasion of the Platinum Jubilee Celebration upon completion of 75 years of its establishment. Students visited about 40 stalls of different medical departments namely Pharmacology, Paediatrics, Medicine, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Respiratory Medicine, Physiology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Paediatric Nephrology, HIV Care and Support, Anaesthesia, Pathology, Dermatology, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, etc. Every stall had various posters, models, mannequins and specimens related to the respective brancheswhich were explained to students by medical college faculty and students.

Stalls related to microbiology depicted the models concerned with different diseases, their treatment and management.  ‘Nikshay’ model was patient management system for TB control under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme. The model of Nanopore Sequencing explained different strains of Covid-19 like Alpha, Zeta, Delta and Omicron. Mycology lab model explained about fungal infections and their lab diagnosis by simple staining techniques.Students also visited the RT-PCR machine and Laminar Air Flow of microbiology department.

Medical students from Department of Anaesthesia explained about the steps of giving Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) which is a lifesaving technique. In Dermatology section students learned about the skin structureand different infections of skin and leprosy.Road safety rules along with the latest technology of Robotics Surgery were explained at the stall of General Surgery. In blood bank department students were educated for blood donation and its importance with the help of models and mannequins.

Students visited Anatomy Section wherehuman body and its functions were demonstrated on actual body. Specimens of developmental stages and anomalies of human embryo, (like craniorachischisis, anencephaly, andsyringomyelia), central nervous system, vital organs present inside a human body were seen. Anatomy of all organs was explained by different models.Extension and flexion of elbow was also demonstrated to students. There was also a riddle game in which students answered questions asked by the medical students.

Students also visited Scary House where medical students showed skeletons and ghosts housed in dark rooms and watched the Puppet Show in the end of visit. The Puppet Show was based on social messages like female foeticide, quit smoking etc.

Outcome of the activity:

The Science week celebration was truly an amalgamation of fun and knowledge. It helped them to know about different medical devices, new technologies, human anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, different diseases and their treatments. The exhibition proved to be useful in spreading the awareness about Medical Science, road safety rules to avoid severe injuries and importance of blood donation which will inculcate social responsibility in students.

Day 2: Movie Screening

On 28 February 2023 movie show for the students of the University was organized. The science fiction movie " Artificial Intelligence" was screened during the movie show.
