3. To discuss about Funding opportunities and Fellowships to Research Scholars and PG students

Summary/Description: A one day workshop on Scientific Communication Skills by Dr. Surendra Nimesh, UGC Assistant Professor, Central University of Rajasthan, Kishangarh was organized by the Department of Biotechnology, IIS (deemed to be) University, Jaipur on Thursday, 22ndMarch 2023 for the Research Scholars and PG students of faculty of Science.

Dr. Nimesh initially discussed about research, research proposal, external agencies to which research proposal is being proposed like DBT, DST, Universities etc., and their criteria of selection. He also stated that in science one has to be a good salesman to seek funding from these agencies. He also explained aboutsynopsis, grants, peers, supervisors, etc. and their roles. He explained three basic elements of the research proposal that one has to keep in mind while proposing a research work were:- the issue or the research problem, research designs or the objectives, and the benefit or the contribution of the research. He told that the result of the research will depend on the creativeness of the researcher by giving a funny example of a donkey and a horse. Components and rules while framing the proposal was explained in various steps with their importance and their writing manner viz., Title, Keywords, Objectives, Problem Statement, Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Timelines, Manpower, Infrastructure, Budget, Expected Outcome, and References.

He then explained various terminologies used in the scientific world like Citation, Reference, Bibliography and need of reference management, software programs for referencing namely Mendeley, Zotero, EndNote, Biblioscape, Ref. Manager, Citavi, their developers, availability and their cost. A demonstration of each and every function of the programme EndNote was given to the students.

He then entertained the students with some jokes and shared the valuable experiences of his journey as student as well as professor. There was a half an hour break as soon as the first session was over.

In the next session Dr. Nimesh had guided the students about plagiarism, its types like verbatim, cutting & pasting from internet, paraphrasing, collusion, inaccurate citation, failure to acknowledge assistance etc, how to avoid it,and even discussed that why do people plagiarize and what is the psychology of those persons behind this?He also enlightened the students about different national fellowships like JRF by DBT, CSIR/ UGC, ICMR, Inspire fellowship program by DST, Women Scientist Scheme A and B by DST, and international were TWAS-NRF Doctoral Programme, Research Grants- Doctoral Programme (DAAD), etc., skill building awards like AWSAR Awards by DST, Research Management Fellowship and Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Programme by DST, and various travel awards like Travel Support Scheme by DST, International Travel Scheme by SERB, Short term Fellowship by EMBO etc.  provided by various authorities and explained their requirements, their procedure to apply, their advantages, and suitability.

Variety of career prospects were also discussed in the session like bio-enterpreneur, core faculty personnel, educator, grants manager, IPR, marketing and sales executive, industrial R &D scientist, product specialist, science communicator.

The workshop was very knowledgeable for all the research scholars and other students as one has to be good enough in writing and must know about scientific writing because it is very much different from other literature writing.

Outcome of the activity/event/seminar/workshop: The students were taught about various topics related to Scientific Writing and Skills like Research Proposal Writing, Fellowship using Research Proposal, Research Article Writing, etc.
