General concepts of animal cell culture: Proliferation, differentiation and dedifferentiation, Cell Culture laboratory: basic requirement, set up

Media -Development of simple growth media, BSS, Chemical, physical and metabolic functions of different constituents of culture medium, Role of CO2 and serum, Serum and protein free defined media and their applications, Growth kinetics of cultured cells

Primary culture and cell line formation, Cell lines: A general concept, finite and infinite cell lines, Organ, organotypic and histotypic cultures, Cell separation, Cell cloning and micromanipulation

Recombinant DNA Technology used in animal cell

Cloning vectors- Plasmids, Bacteriophages, Cosmids, phagemids, YAC, BAC, Enzymes used in gene manipulation- DNA polymerase, Polynucleotide kinase, ligase, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase, Reverse transcriptase, Restriction endonucleases, Transfection techniques, Blotting Techniques- Southern, Northern and Western Blotting, Expression of proteins in animal cells: GISH, FISH, microarray
