Objective: 

On completion of this course the students will be able to:

CO 22: Identify fundamentals of the cell and its various components

CO 23:  Examine membrane structure and transmembrane transport mechanisms

CO 24: Interpret and summarize the physiology of cell organelles

CO 25: Assess the fundamentals of nuclear structure and it’s functions and compare and contrast the different Cytoplasmic filaments

 

CO 26: Analyze the concept of cell division and cellular differentiation

Cell Structure
  • Cell as a basic unit of living system, The Cell theory.
  • Structure of different cell types -Eukaryotic cells- Animal cell and Plant cell; Prokaryotic cell - Bacteria, Mycoplasma.

Cell membrane and Transmembrane Transport
  • Cell membrane structure.
  • Cell membrane models-Unit membrane model and Singer and Nicholson’s model.
  • Passive and Active transport through cell membrane.

Cell Organelles
  • Structure and function of cell organelles- Nucleus, Golgi Bodies, Endoplasmic reticulum (rough and smooth), Ribosome, Mitochondria, Chloroplast, Lysosomes, and Micro bodies.

Nucleus & Cell Motility
  • Chromosomes-chemical composition and structural organization, Polytene and Lamp brush chromosomes.
  • Cytoplasmic filaments-Microfilaments, Intermediate filaments, microtubule, cilia and flagella.

Cell cycle, Division and Specialization
  • Cell division and cell cycle, centrioles, Cell-cell junctions.
  • Cellular differentiation and specialization (Muscle and Nerve cell)
