Introduction to fungi

Occurrence and distribution, thallus structure, characteristics, nutrition, Ainsworth and Sussman classification, fungi and ecosystem: saprophytic, parasitic, mutualistic and symbiotic relationship with plants and animals, reproduction in fungi: asexual, sexual and parasexual.

Study of the different classes of fungi

Salient features of division and sub division of Myxomycota, Mastigomycota, Zygomycota, Ascomycotina, Basidiomycotina and Deuetromycotina.

Salient Features of Algae

Distribution, morphology and classification of algae. Isolation from soil and water, algal ecology, media and methods used for cultivating algae. Lichens- ascolichen, basidiolichen, deuterolichen.

Study of the different classes of Algae

Occurrence, thallus organization and reproduction in Chlorophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Phaeophyceae, Pyrrophyceae and diatoms.

Unit V: 
Economic importance of algae and fungi

Economic importance of algae as primary producers and commercial products. Uses of algae in heavy metal removal, algal blooms and toxins. Economic importance of Mycorrhiza: ecto-endo and ect-endo, Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi, fungi as biocontrol agents, Mycotoxins, potential application in Agriculture, environment, industry, food.
