Department of Biotechnology organised a guest lecture on “DNA Torque and Cancer” by Dr. Ashutosh Gupta on 18th January 2014. Dr. Ashutosh Gupta is a distinguished Senior Data Scientist at Impetus Technology and Visiting Scientist at NIH.
Dr. Gupta discussed about the mechanism of biological systems to control noise and complex nature of human body. He explained about the gene C-Myc proto onco genes which are regulated in most types of cancers and are expressed at very low level. In drosophila cells with increased level of myc can induce apoptosis in neighboring cells with decreased level of myc expression. The lecture mainly emphasized on the basics about DNA structure, linking number and its energy facts and passive & active role of DNA in regulation of transcription. He vividly described implications of torque on DNA structure and developing genome using DNA supercoiling. It was an inspiring and interesting lecture and students were highly motivated to work in this field.
