REPORT OF TRIP TO CSWRI

A one day trip was organized by the Department off Biotechnology to Centre for Sheep and Wool Research Institute (CSWRI), Avika Nagar (Via Jaipur) on 7 August, 2013. 26 students from B.Sc. and M.Sc. (Biotechnology and Microbiology), research scholars along with Prof. Pradeep Bhatnagar, Dr. Sreemoyee Chatterjee and Ms. Payal Mehtani visited the institute. The institute is based on rearing of national and international breeds of sheep for the purpose of wool and meat. The group visited the Animal Biotechnology Section, Division of Nutrition, Animal Physiology and Biochemistry Laboratory, The Rabbit Broiler, Azolla Farming and Sheep Section of CSWRI. The students got acquainted with the instrumentation related to DNA and RNA handling, micromanipulation, artificial insemination, detection of adulteration in wool products using DNA fingerprinting etc. The group also visited the Wool Plant to see textile production and its finishing and interacted with the technical staff of the plant. The students got exposure of different upcoming opportunities and scopes in the field of Biotechnology. The trip also included the visit to the famous temple of Kalyanji in Diggi.

REOPRT ON A LECTURE ON IPR AND ITS CAREER PROSPECTS

Department of Biotechnology organized a lecture on ‘Intellectual Property Rights and its Career Prospects’ on 5 August, 2013, at 10 am in the AV Hall by Mr. Pankaj Kumar (IP Attorney).The lecture was attended by undergraduate and postgraduate students of all the faculties of the university. The lecture included the basic concepts of IPR including the types of IPR, its importance and career prospects in the field. The talk focused on the courses offered by the university at UG and PG levels as certificate, diploma and advance diploma.

A Documentary- “The Green House Effect” was shown to PG students of Biotechnology and Microbiology on 20th February, 2013 to make them aware of various fundamental aspects of environmental pollution and its effect on mankind. The students also expressed their views on the existing threat to our Earth and mankind, conservation of energy, natural resources, water, plants, etc.

The Department of Biotechnology organized an Intra-departmental Quiz for PG students of Biotechnology IV Semester, on 20th February, 2013. The First position was bagged by Team R. Koch. The postgraduate students participated with lot of enthusiasm.

A two day National Conference on Intellectual Property Rights: Current And Future prospects, organized by the Dept of Biotechnology was held from 12th to 13th October,2012 at ICG, The IIS University.The Conference commenced with the inaugural session seeking the blessings of almighty in the form of vandana,followed by lighting of the lamp by all the dignitaries on the dais, immediately after which Dr. Ashok Gupta, Conference chairperson extended a  warm welcome to the guests, participants and resource persons. Prof. Pradeep Bhatnagar acquainted the audience with the aims and objectives of the conference.The chief guest of the conference, Justice P.C. Jain, former Judge, Rajasthan  High Court, Jaipur graced the occasion with his inaugural speech.

Mr. Sanjoy Jhanwar, Advocate, Supreme Court of India, New Delhi gave the keynote address on Intellectual property rights. He highlighted the fundamentals of Intellectual property like patent, copyright, trademark. This session was followed by 5 technical sessions spread over 2 days and chaired by luminaries from academics and industries like Dr. A.K.Kashyap, Prof. S.K Mohanty, Dr Dinesh Mishra, Mr Shashwat Purohit, Mr. Vikas Gupta.

Eminent scientists and IP professionals like Prof. Ganesh Hingmire, Dr. Rekha Chaturvedi, Mr. Vikas Asawat, Dr. Prakash Chand, Govind Sharma, Prof. Saroj Mishra also shared their experiences on varied topics such as:

  • significance of intellectual property rights and IP infrastructure in India and related issues.
  • Patent: Bio Prospecting , Bio Piracy,
  • significance of trademarks,
  • protection of plant varieties and farmer’s rights.
  • Trade Secrets

Besides the technical sessions, the young practitioners shared their findings and experience through poster presentations. The conference thus brought together a galaxy of subject experts to deliberate on and arrive at models for current trends in IP management at the local and global level.
